Enzymes

Enzymes are biological catalysts that accelerate biochemical reactions in the body without being consumed themselves. They are essential for a variety of vital processes, including digestion, metabolism, DNA replication, and signal transduction. The mode of action of enzymes is based on their ability to lower the activation energy required for chemical reactions to proceed, allowing these reactions to occur efficiently at biological temperatures.

In dietary supplements, enzymes are used to support digestion and nutrient absorption, especially in individuals with limited enzymatic activity or digestive complaints. Commonly used enzymes in these preparations include proteases, which break down proteins; lipases for fat digestion; amylases for starch digestion; and lactase, which splits lactose.

Supplementing with enzymes can help improve nutrient availability, optimize digestive processes, and reduce gastrointestinal discomfort.

The effectiveness of these dietary supplements is critical and requires precise formulation to ensure that the enzymes remain stable and become active in the intestinal tract, where they exert their digestion-enhancing effects.
