From Spirulina pioneer to an established supplier of premium raw materials
When Dr. Winfried Behr established his business in 1976, the food industry had seen very few differentiation and creativity so far.
The graduated chemist had early identified the opportunities in the changing industry and first experimented with a number of exotic raw materials.
Eventually, it was the “discovery” of Spirulina that set the economical basis for the company’s expansion. Dr. Behr imported the microalgae directly from Mexico and established it in the European market as classic among the food supplements.

It was his keen feel for trends and his cosmopolitan appearance that made him gain a great reputation – not only in the producer countries – and made the small business in Bonn an insider tip in the up-and-coming sector. Over the years, the first mover with excellent contacts to overseas had turned into a capable supplier of high-quality raw materials for food supplement manufacturers. Product portfolio, partnerships and, last but not least, the number of satisfied customers had been growing steadily.
Innovations
In 2009, when Martin Landré took over the business and the experienced, committed team from Dr. Winfried Behr, the company witnessed a smooth generation change. Together, we were able to maintain the company’s traditions and, at the same time, focus on innovations.
Directly after the handover, we implemented a powerful enterprise resource planning system to seamlessly track and trace all product movements.
Additionally, we are certified according to DIN ISO 22000 – the comprehensive and internationally accepted standard for management systems in the food industry.
Thus, we can guarantee our customers a high level of process reliability and compliance with these standards. And Dr. Behr is also certified with the organic label and offers kosher and halal certified products.
Thanks to investing in processes and safety, we could continually expand our portfolio of high-quality products. In addition to premium conventional herbal raw materials, we also offer a choice of plant substances in organic quality – a clear advantage for our customers and their consumers.
